What is a pediatric tooth injury?

At Pedi Center Urgent Care, we understand that children are active and accidents can happen at any time. Pediatric tooth injuries—such as chipped, cracked, or knocked-out teeth—are common in kids due to falls, sports, or play. These injuries may involve baby (primary) or adult (permanent) teeth and can also affect the gums, lips, or tongue.

If your child experiences any trauma to the mouth, it’s important to seek prompt evaluation. Our experienced medical team can assess the injury, provide immediate care to manage pain or bleeding, and help determine if a specialist referral is needed. Early treatment can prevent complications like infection or long-term dental problems.

What are the common causes of tooth injuries in children?

Tooth injuries are a common issue among children, often resulting from everyday activities such as accidental falls, sports, or playground accidents. At Pedi Center Urgent Care, we understand that kids are naturally active and curious, which can sometimes lead to dental trauma like chipped, fractured, or even knocked-out teeth.

Some of the most frequent causes we see at our clinic include:

• Accidental Falls: As children learn to walk or run, especially on uneven surfaces or playground equipment, falls are a leading cause of dental injuries.
• Sports and Play: Contact sports, or games involving balls and other objects, increase the risk of dental trauma. Collisions with other children or objects during play are also common.
• Bicycle and Scooter Accidents: Riding without proper protective gear can lead to significant injuries, including to the teeth and mouth.
• Biting Hard Objects: Biting down on hard foods or objects can crack or break teeth.
• Rare Causes: In some instances, dental trauma may be linked to child abuse or neglect, which our trained providers are equipped to recognize and address appropriately.

Our experienced pediatric specialists are ready to evaluate and treat dental injuries quickly and compassionately. If your child experiences a tooth injury, immediate care can make a significant difference in the outcome. Our clinic offers:

• Prompt assessment and management of dental trauma
• Guidance for at-home care after an injury
• Referrals to pediatric dental specialists when needed
• Support and resources for prevention, including advice on protective sports gear and child safety

How can I prevent tooth injuries in my child?

At Pedi Center Urgent Care, we see many children each year with tooth injuries that could have been prevented with a few simple precautions. Preventing tooth injuries in children involves a combination of supervision, creating safe environments, and encouraging healthy habits. Here are some tips from our pediatric specialists:

• Use Appropriate Protective Gear: Make sure your child wears mouthguards during sports or physical activities. Our team can recommend the right gear for your child’s age and activity level.
• Childproof Your Home: To avoid falls and accidents, use safety gates in high-risk areas like bathrooms or playrooms, and pad any sharp furniture edges. We can offer advice on the best ways to make your home safer during your next visit.
• Teach Safe Habits: Remind your child not to run or play rough with objects in their mouth, such as pencils or toys, as this can easily lead to injuries.
• Regular Check-Ups: While routine dental visits are essential, if your child ever suffers a tooth injury, our urgent care center is here to provide immediate evaluation and treatment to help prevent complications.
• Promote Good Oral Hygiene: Encourage your child to brush and floss daily and avoid giving them hard foods like ice or hard candies that can crack or chip teeth.
• Be a Role Model: Children learn by example, so practicing and modeling safe behaviors will help them develop lifelong habits.

If your child does experience a dental injury, remember that we are here for you. Our providers are trained to handle dental emergencies and can help you manage your child’s pain, prevent infection, and coordinate follow-up care if needed.

By taking these precautions and knowing you have a caring team ready to help, you can keep your child’s smile healthy and safe!

What should I do if my child’s tooth is knocked out?

At Pedi Center Urgent Care, we know accidents can happen when you least expect them—especially with active children. If your child experiences a knocked-out tooth, acting quickly and calmly can make all the difference. Here’s what you should do, and how our team can help:

1. Determine the Type of Tooth:

First, check whether the tooth is a baby (primary) tooth or a permanent (adult) tooth. The steps differ for each.

If it’s a Permanent Tooth:

Handle the tooth by the crown (the chewing surface), not the root, to avoid damage.

If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with milk or saline—do not scrub or use soap.
Don’t let the tooth dry out! If possible, place it gently back into the socket (make sure it’s facing the right way) and have your child bite down softly on a clean cloth.

If you can’t reinsert it, place the tooth in a container with milk, saline, or your child’s saliva.

Time is critical! The sooner you seek care, the better the chance of saving the tooth. Bring your child to Pedi Center Urgent Care or your dentist immediately—ideally within 30 minutes.

If it’s a Baby Tooth:

Do NOT attempt to reinsert the tooth, as this could damage the developing permanent tooth.

Rinse your child’s mouth with water and use gauze to control any bleeding.
Comfort your child, watch for signs of pain or shock, and contact us for further guidance.

Our pediatric urgent care team is equipped to assess dental injuries, manage pain and bleeding, and provide immediate care or referrals to pediatric dental specialists as needed. We’re here to ensure your child’s comfort and health in any emergency.

If your child suffers a dental injury or any urgent health concern, don’t hesitate—visit us right away for expert, compassionate care.
